Northville Business District Historic Walking Tour
Fulton County is rich is history. Northville has recently created a walking tour to highlight the buildings dating back to the mid-1800s. The first settlement of Northville was in the late 1780s and the village was incorporated in 1873.
The walking tour brochure contains information on 20 historic businesses in Northville; each of these buildings is identified with a metal information sign on them. Also for purchase is the Northville Business District Book ($10) with detailed information about each building. The free brochures are available in many of the Northville businesses as well as the book (a list is provided below).

Fulton County Foliage Report: Week of September 30-October 6
I LOVE NY started the “New York Fall Foliage Report” on September 9 and continue until the end of the foliage season, around the first or second week in November. Fulton County has its own “foliage spotters” to participate in this annual report.
Reporting station: Gloversville
Percent of trees predicted to have changed by the coming weekend: 40-50%
Brilliance: Average
Predominating colors: Greenish-yellow, touches of reds and oranges are becoming more prominent and brighter
Rating: Midpoint
The red and orange colors are starting to become brighter and the yellows are becoming more prominent than the green. We are about midpoint especially in the higher elevations. The vibrancy of the color has improved from dull to average. There are touches of bright color especially when the sun hits the leaves. There is still a lot of leave coverage on the trees making the next few weeks optimal viewing.

Record Northern Pike Historical Road Marker
The Fulton County Baseball & Sports Hall of Fame (HOF) will be dedicating its next Fulton County Sports Historical Road Marker to denote that the World Record Northern Pike was caught on Great Sacandaga Lake.
The historic fish was caught by area angler Peter Dubuc on September 15, 1940. Measuring 52.5” and weighing 46 pounds and 2 ounces, it was the heaviest northern pike ever caught in the world at that time. Heavier fish have since been caught in Germany and Canada, and the Fulton County Fish is still recognized by the International Game Fish Assocaition as the United States record.
To commemorate the 75th anniversary of this historic catch, two historical road markers have been created to be placed on the Great Sacandaga Lake. The Great Sacandaga Lake Fisheries Federation (GSLFF) is the sponsor of the first marker, which will be dedicated on Saturday, September 19th at the corner of Benedict Loop and County Highway 110 in Broadalbin. According to HOF representative Mike Hauser, “We are excited to be honoring the legacy of Peter Dubuc and his historic catch 75 years ago. To know that the largest northern pike ever caught in the United States (and one of the largest ever in the world) came from right here in Fulton County is truly amazing.” The ceremony will take place at noon and members of Dubuc’s Family and the GSLFF will be on hand for the unveiling. The public is invited to attend. A second Marker created by the friends of Andy Luey will be dedicated in his memory later in the fall near Lanzi’s on the Lake on Route 30A in Mayfield.

Fulton County Foliage Report: Week of September 9-15
I LOVE NY started the “New York Fall Foliage Report” on September 9 and continue until the end of the foliage season, around the first or second week in November. Fulton County has its own “foliage spotters” to participate in this annual report.
Our Fulton County Report for the Week of September 9-15:
Reporting station: Gloversville
Percent of trees predicted to have changed by the coming weekend: 5%
Brilliance: Dull
Predominating colors: Still green (losing the dark green color), touch of yellow
Rating: Just Beginning
In years past, travelers who signed the guest book at the Fulton County Visitor Center rated the best scenic rides through Fulton County. Today, we feel, these still hold true.
- The most popular drive is Rt. 29A West/Rt. 10 North through the Caroga Lake, Pine Lake area, and 29A west through the Town of Stratford.
- The second most popular scenic drive is north Rt. 30 North through Northville around the Great Sacandaga Lake and then south down Lakeview Road through the Town of Broadalbin.
- The third favorite starts on Rt. 334 and runs south through the community of Sammonsville.
We also recommend taking the hike up Kane Mountain (prior to hunting season) for a spectacular view. Please be aware of your surroundings and be cautious.
In the villages and cities many properties have the best trees that turn color each year. A great example would be the Fulton County Courthouse on N. William Street in Johnstown. It’s one of the most photographed buildings in Fulton County especially during peak season when the leaves have turned 100%.
Please enjoy the “Leaf Peeping” season and the many autumn activities Fulton County has to offer.

TRIATHLON DONATES TO LOCAL CHARITY
79 athletes participated in the Sixth Annual Peck’s Lake Challenge Sprint Triathlon, held on Saturday, August 1 on and around Peck’s Lake, located in the towns of Johnstown and Bleecker in Fulton County. $1,000 was raised by the event to benefit the Child Advocacy Center, a service of the Mental Health Association in Fulton & Montgomery Counties. The event was co-presented by the Peck’s Lake Protective Association and the Fulton Montgomery Regional Chamber of Commerce.
“We are pleased to help present a positive event such as the Triathlon in our community and to be able to donate a portion of the proceeds to such a worthy cause,” stated Gina DaBiere-Gibbs, Director of Tourism for the Chamber. “Fulton County is fortunate to have such a great event that showcases the area to visitors. And the Child Advocacy Center is an essential service providing a safe environment for children and families.”

The Child Advocacy Center provides a comfortable, private child-friendly setting which is physically and psychologically safe for children and families. For more information about the CAC, please call (518) 736-2443 or visit www.mentalhealthassociation.org.
