Hans’ Creek
Take County Route 110 north for 6.1 miles. The marker is located on the right
Hans’ Creek runs through North Broadalbin and empties into the Sacandaga Lake. The stream is believed to have been named by Sir William Johnson. While fishing in the Sacandaga Vlaie, his companion John (Hans) Conyne fell out of the boat and nearly drowned. After this incident, Sir William always referred to this location as Hans’ Creek, Hans being a common derivative of the name John in colonial times. Just a few miles north on County Route 110 and further on to Saratoga Route 7, you can find several other colonial and Revolutionary era markers relating to Sir William and his associates.
