Last Home of Nicholas Stoner
Take route 29 west out of Johnstown, turn north on Route 10 at the intersection just past Rockwood. The marker is on the left side of the road just past the Newkirk Settlement.
NIcholas Stoner became a local folk hero due to his activity in the Revolutionary War. After the war, he became a noted trapper, hunter and guide and received much attention in the book by 19th century historian Jeptha Simms, “Trappers of New York.” This 1976 marker was erected by the Town of Caroga Bicentennial Committee and Town Historian Lena Durey.
